3 Common Mistakes PC Users Make

Here at the Canberra Computer Doctors, people making mistakes with their computers all the time. Let’s face it, when you are in the business of repairing computer problems you pretty much see everything. Here are a few things we see on a regular basis – are you guilty of committing any of these mistakes?

Not Properly Ejecting USB Drives

I think this is something that we have all been guilty of at one stage or another! However if you simply pull out a USB drive without correctly “ejecting it” you can risk data loss. If you are unsure of how to do this, Microsoft have a guide you can read here. It is important to get into the habit of doing this, as there is no worse feeling than losing an entire days work because you couldn’t take the 3 seconds it requires to remove the device properly!

Trying To Over Optimise Your Computer

No one likes having a slow computer and everyone likes to feel safe online, but trying to over optimise your computer can actually have negative consequences. For example, if you have two antivirus programs running on your machine, they may conflict with each other leading to all sorts of strange results. Also running computer programs that claim to speed up your computer rarely do anything except empty your wallet. A good program to run every few weeks is CCleaner, but anything else is usually overkill.

Forgetting To Duplicate Your Data

There is nothing more heartbreaking than having to tell one of our customers that they may not be able to recover the data from their hard drive. Whether it be holiday photos, wedding videos or just anything of sentimental value, it is never a good feeling to lose something that is important to you. All too often when we ask customers if they had a backup of their external hard drives we get the response – “that was my backup”. Hard drives cost well under $100 these days for a few terabytes of storage. Online backups are also readily available which will protect your data against anything that can go wrong. There are so many options on how you can protect your data these days there really is no excuse not to!
